Progressive overload with built-in recovery

Training load increases across a 3-week build, followed by a recovery week at reduced volume. This 3:1 cycle is the foundation of sustainable endurance development. The engine protects this structure even when it adjusts individual sessions.

Load ratio as a continuous signal, not a threshold

Comparing short-term training load to your long-term baseline is one of the most validated injury-risk signals in sports science. Rather than flipping a recommendation at a single cutoff number, Adaptiv blends load ratio, recovery, and training monotony into a continuous risk score. Adjustments scale proportionally.

Subjective data is first-class

How you feel matters as much as what the numbers say. Your fatigue, soreness, and energy ratings carry equal weight to objective HRV and resting HR data in the recovery score, because athletes know their bodies, and biometrics lag lived experience by 24 to 48 hours.

Heart rate-based load, not just time

Training load is calculated using TRIMPexp, a heart rate reserve method that applies an exponential intensity curve. An easy hour and a hard hour are not equal. An hour at threshold produces roughly 3 to 4 times the physiological load of an easy aerobic hour.

Phased training periodization

Plans progress through three phases: base building with hills or fartlek, strength with interval work, and race-specific sharpening with tempo. Each phase builds on the last. Intensity zone tracking confirms the athlete is actually spending time where the plan intends.

Health before performance

When race date and build rate conflict, Adaptiv shortens the plan rather than compressing the progression. Slightly undertrained and healthy beats overtrained and injured every time.
